IT PAYS TO POSITION YOURSELF IN TECH

It’s impossible to predict the future & I’m not even going to try. However, it’s prudent to pay attention to trends. In my conversations with attorneys, I try to find out what they’re working on. I also keep an eye on the financial markets & take note of the companies going public.

These are the buzz-worthy areas on the rise:

  • Cannabis
  • Cryptocurrency
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Gene-editing
  • Healthcare innovation
  • Autonomous driving

And here are some questions to consider:

  • How is your particular practice positioned for the continued rise of the digital age?
  • What’s your firm’s perspective on change?
  • Are you representing companies that embrace technology or are they stuck in the past?
  • Does your firm have a dedicated technology group?  Privacy, Cyber, Blockchain, FinTech?

We’re knee-deep in a huge technology revolution and I’m urging you to get in on it! It always pays to be an early adopter and learn the lay of the land before others. You’ll be happy you did.

EVOLUTION OF A LAW FIRM PARTNER

It all starts with a vision. A goal. A long-term plan. No one makes partner overnight or in a haphazard way. It takes careful planning, precise actions & is most successfully executed with the help of an experienced guide in the field with a strong handle on the market. In other words: me.

Here’s the story of a candidate I worked with over a number of years. Through collaboration, strategic planning & hard work, we made his dream into a reality.

In 2016, I was introduced to a 5th year attorney. He knew all along that he wanted to be an equity partner at a major law firm and to focus on a highly specific area. We built a relationship on trust and got to work. This candidate’s razor focused dream helped us carve out the steps he would take for long-term success. We secured multiple offers for him, which set him up for future success on the partner track.

Fast forward to today: he’s now a well respected equity partner at a top firm. He was recently made a practice group leader. Because of his vision, determination & the clarity of his goal, I never doubted his success.

Visualize your dreams, collaborate with an experienced guide and you will find yourself writing the same story.

THE ABSOLUTE BEST ADVICE

As an attorney you’re trained to weigh & measure facts to make decisions all day long. Pros, cons, risks & rewards. The legal mind is primed for successful decision making, based upon evidence & critical thinking. That being said, even the most skilled & sophisticated lawyer should partner with an experienced headhunter to pursue his/her professional goals. Together, we collaborate to create a personalized long-term plan, based on your individual lifestyle, skills & abilities. I enjoy being in a position where I help weigh, measure & align your goals with the best opportunities available.

It’s natural to seek outside perspective before making an important decision. But be careful who you ask, as not all advice is created equal. Some people enjoy hearing THEMSELVES speak & don’t actually consider YOU in the advice. And even if it comes from a good place, it might not be the best advice for you. Yes, gather advice & information, but make sure to pay close attention to the motivation behind it. Are they speaking in generalities or custom tailoring it to you as an individual? The wrong advice may hinder your career growth & get in your own way.

Your career path is highly specific & necessitates the consideration of a skilled headhunter. At Langer Search, we pride ourselves on listening & providing the most personalized guidance for your success.

ARE YOU HEADED TOWARD BURNOUT?

Summer’s here & this may be the last time you have the opportunity to work remotely. As a lawyer at a firm, you’re paid to bill time. And that mentality doesn’t bode well for days off, vacations or breaks in general. Endless screen time, back-to-back zoom calls, working around the clock & not scheduling time off will inevitably lead to burnout. Burnout can affect your physical & mental health & some symptoms include:

  • Alienation from work
  • Headaches, stomachaches, extreme fatigue
  • Emotional exhaustion
  • Reduced performance

The past year has been pretty hectic for most of the AmLaw 100 firms, so my bet is you’ve been working hard. You deserve a break. My suggestion is to prioritize self-care by taking some time off this summer to completely recharge. Leave your computer at home. Go off the grid, get outside, relax. I know that sounds impossible to some, but it’s critical. You’ll come back stronger, gain clarity & motivation. And honestly, you need it. The billable hours will always be there, but your overall health may not.
